Shield

The
Charity Shield is an annual event and trial match between St
George and South Sydney. Proceeds from gate takings are donated
to charity - the original tradition seeing donations being made
to hospitals in the St George and South Sydney districts.
In all, there have been 25 Charity Shields with the honours
going to:
St George 14, Souths 8 and 3 draws.
The Charity Shield match is generally regarded as an indication
that the Rugby League Football season has begun.

'Premiership' and 'First Grade' refers to the Australian rugby league
competition which began in 1908. Originally known as the New South Wales
Rugby League (NSWRL) first grade competition, or premiership. In the
1990s the competition underwent numerous changes where the Australian
Rugby League (ARL) and then the National Rugby League (NRL), established
in 1998, inherited the history of the NSWRL first grade premiership. |
