A 15-year-old rugby union prospect in 1999, Saffy moved
to Australia from South Africa before switching to rugby
league. In 2008, the former Tigers forward escaped a biting
charge whilst playing for Saints against the Raiders.
Canberra halfback Todd Carney claimed he had been bitten
during a tackle, but discrepancies in his testimony and
inconclusive video footage led to the NRL judiciary finding
Saffy not guilty.
Saffy has extended his stay at the Dragons for a further
two years, re-signing until 2010. |

A Queensland Maroons and Australian Kangaroos representative,
Wendell Sailor has played at every level of the game,
as well as playing under a number of administrations during
one of the most turbulent periods in the history of the
game.
In his debut season with the Broncos, Sailor was part
of the team that won the premiership, defeating the St
George Dragons 14-6 in 1993. In the same year, he won
the Rookie of the Year award at the Broncos club. More
premierships were to follow with Sailor's large frame
and speed out wide proving too much for most defending
wingers.
In 1994, Sailor's representative career began when he
was selected for the Kangaroos.
In 1996, Sailor debuted for Queensland in State of Origin.
The turmoil of Super League followed with Sailor remaining
at the Broncos and becoming one of the highest paid players
during the bidding war.
After playing for the Broncos in the NSWRL, ARL, Super
League and the NRL, Sailor switched to rugby union and
played for the Queensland Reds in 2002. He debuted for
the Wallabies the following year. He then made another
big-money move to the NSW Waratahs in 2006.
In 2006, Sailor's biggest controversy was to follow with
the dual international returning a positive drug test
for cocaine and anabolic steroids. A two year suspension
followed, effectively barring Sailor from playing in either
football code.
In June, 2007, the St George Illawarra Dragons announced
that they would sign Sailor on a two-year incentive based
contract when his ban expired in April, 2008.
In April and May 2008, Sailor made several appearances
for Shellharbour in the NSW Cup. He has also since been
loaned to Qld Cup side the Burleigh Bears when no first
grade spot was available.
In June 2008, Sailor finally made his return to first
grade rugby league when Saints took on his old team the
Broncos in Wollongong. Unfortunately, the comeback was
short-lived with Sailor suffering a fractured cheekbone
whilst making a tackle in the first half.
Sailor recovered in time to make seven more appearances
in 2008. He scored his comeback try against his former
club the Broncos in round 23. He later scored a hat-trick
in the Dragons' 40-14 demolishing of the Eels in round
25.
Sailor still has a year to run on his contract with Saints.
But other deals are in the wind with European Super League
entrants the Celtic Crusaders and French Rugby Union looking
to sign him for 2009.
But Sailor stayed put, eventually playing one more season
in 2009, his former Broncos coach Wayne Bennett joining
him at the Dragons. In what was his final year in the
NRL, Sailor was a nominee for the 2009 Dally-M winger
of the Year award.
His final game was for the Indigenous All Stars (vs NRL
All Stars) in a sell-out pre-season match on the 13th
February, 2010. Sailor scored the opening try, the Indigenous
side ultimately posting a 16-12 victory.
Sailor has since pursued a career in the media and has
become a regular panelist on Channel Nine and Fox, as
well as being employed by Dragons media. In addition,
Sailor has involved himself in awareness programs including
Rugby League's One Community program. |

EARLY SAINT STILL SHARP ON HIS FEET

St George's oldest living player, 98-year-old JOE SHARP,
is still fighting fit and earned a hearty round of applause
for his longevity at the Grand Final lunch.
Joe, a second rower for the Dragons in the late 20s and
early 30s, will celebrate 76 years of holy union to wife
Violet on the Central Coast on November 17.
"I feel like I have another couple of years left
in me," Joe said at the Lunch, where Prime Minister
John Howard and Labor leader Mark Latham raised a glass
to him.
"I had one beer today," added the former railway
worker.
"I'm under strict instruction from the wife not to
drink, but I always had a couple of schooners every day
when I was working – two was enough."
Still as sharp as a tack and remarkably nimble, he bypassed
the lift for the stairs as he left the club unassisted.
The couple's daughter, Bev Lawrence, recently discovered
the above picture of the 1931 First-Grade side taken at
Earl Park (St George vs North Sydney).
Joe is the one wearing headgear.

Joe Sharp thought to be oldest living former first
grader.
"OLDEST SAINT" JOE SHARP CELEBRATES 100 YEARS!
JOE SHARP, Saint's oldest living player, reached triple
figures in excellent health when he celebrated his 100th
birthday in April.
Mr Sharp also played three games for Canterbury-Bankstown
and is thought to be the oldest living former first-grader.

An experienced first grader with 60 NRL appearances, Sheppard
was released from the North Queensland Cowboys, linking
up with Saints midway through 2005. He played one first
grade game with Saints in 2005 (round 18 v Eels at Parramatta
Stadium, 8 July).
Sheppard's contract with Saints was extended until 2006.
In 2006, he played three first grade matches and at time
of publishing, is off-contract. |

At
5' 2" (157cm) and 9st 4 lb (59 kgs), Shulman was
one of the smallest men to play the game.
Graded in 1970, Shulman debuted in first grade in 1971.
His career stalled briefly after breaking his leg in 1973.
He had a plate inserted but made a comeback in 1974.
He played in the historic 1977 drawn grand final but suffered
a back injury after receiving knees in the back courtesy
of Parramatta forward Ray Higgs.
Shulman watched from the sidelines as Saints
won the Grand Final replay 22-0.
In 1978, Shulman was named captain, taking over from Steve
Edge. In the same year, a neck injury forced Shulman's
retirement (Craig Young taking over as captain).
In all, Shulman played 170 games for St George - some
55 to 60 in first grade (including Amco Cup).
Shulman's nickname,'Bantam' was coined by team mate Billy
Smith and stuck throughout most of his career. Another
nickname of 'Mighty Atom' was only used in the media early
in his career and rarely used.
A favourite of supporters during the successful
70s era, Shulman went on to coach in the lower grades
before being elected to the Saints' board in 1984. He
later moved to Brisbane.

With plenty of outside backs in the club ranks, Simmonds
played much of 2005 in the Premier League (second grade),
playing just five games in the first grade.
Simmonds' contract with Saints was extended into 2006
(six games) before he signed with South Sydney Rabbitohs
for 2007.

in Sydney.

Originally a centre, Billy Smith became one of the most
competitive and tenacious halfbacks to ever play the game.
He will be forever noted as a St George legend who always
played above his weight.
A St George junior (Mortdale Mighty Midgets and Renown),
Smith's career escalated under the coaching of Norm Provan.
Twice winner of the Harry Sunderland medal for best Australian
player in a Test series, Smith went on to captain Australia
in the 1970 Rugby League World Cup.
His partnership with fullback Graeme Langlands in the
1966 Grand Final has been regarded as one of the most
memorable in history with the two champions seeming to
have an intuitive and unbeatable knowledge of each other's
movements.
Billy Smith played in four Grand Final wins in 1963-66
and played in two losing grand finals in 1971 and 1975.
He also played in the third grade side that won the premiership
in 1972 and the 1976 reserve grade Grand Final winning
side.
In all, Billy Smith played 296 all grade matches which
remains as a Dragons club record.

Former Casino halfback, Brian Smith was
another player kept in the lower grades by the evergreen
Billy Smith.
Brian Smith contributed to the St George district
as coach of James Cook High before coaching Newtown U/23s
side.
Played with Souths and coached in their
lower grades before becoming first grade coach of Illawarra
in 1984.
Following a coaching stint in the UK, Smith
returned to Australia to take up his appointment as first
grade coach of St George in 1991.
He guided Saints to two grand final appearances
in 1992 and 1993 but left the club when the Super Leagur
turmoil erupted in 1996.
After a second stint in the UK, Smith returned
to Sydney to become head coach at Parramatta.

Kiwi international was co-captain of the
Dragons.
Smith came under the scrutiny of Jim Hall's
NRL Match Review Committee when TV commentator Ray Warren
and Melbourne coach Chris Anderson raised question marks
over Smith's running style. It was claimed that Smith
was raising his knees when meeting the defence.
A series of hearings at Jim Hall's NRL judiciary
and subsequent suspensions eventually saw Smith forced
out of the Australian competition.
Smith went on to a career with Wigan in the UK before
returning to Australia to play with the Newcastle Knights.

club.

premiership. He was knocked out but recovered to score
13 points in Saints' 31-14 victory over Easts.
Neville Smith, aged 81, passed away in August, 1997.

Originally from Lismore and younger brother
of Dragons and Steelers coach Brian Smith.
In 1992, Tony Smith was named on the interchange
bench in the grand final against Brisbane.
In 1993, he was named in the run-on side in the grand
final, once again against the Broncos.
An injury to his achilles tendon in a trial in Maryborough
ruled Smith out for 1994, but he was able to make a brief
comeback in 1995.
Went on to join his brother's coaching team at Parramatta
and then moved on to coach Huddersfield (2001-2003) and
Leeds in the UK, guiding Leeds Rhinos to a premiership
wins in 2004 and 2007.
Following a successful coaching career in Great Britain,
which saw him rise to success at an international level,
the former St George five-eighth committed himself to
the game in Europe when he declared his intentions to
become a British citizen in 2008.
The national coach of Great Britain in January 2008, Tony
Smith lives in the northern English town of Huddersfield,
the birthplace of rugby league, with his wife and two
children.

Roosters 32 v Knights 2 at the Sydney Football Stadium
(Aussie Stadium).
First Grade Debut (with Dragons): 1/6/07 (Round 12),
Dragons 11 v Broncos 4 at Kogarah.
From 2005-2007, Soward made 22 appearances with the
Sydney Roosters, scoring 26 points.
In 2007, after playing one match with the Roosters,
Soward was released, linking up with Saints to replace
injured halfback Mathew Head.
Soward had an immediate impact in round 12 against the
Broncos, dominating the match with kicks in general
play while kicking one goal and one field goal to put
the icing on a man-of -the-match performance.
In 2008, Jamie Soward was named in the Indigenous Dreamtime
team, playing in the World Cup curtain raiser on October
26 at the Sydney Football Stadium. Soward has aboriginal
heritage from his Dad's side of the family and is part
of the "Wradjuri" tribe. The Dreamtime team
defeated the New Zealand Maori 34-26 in what a highly
entertaining match of open rugby league.
Soward's contract with Saints has been extended into
2008.

The nephew of former All Blacks centre "Smokin"
Joe Stanley, Chase Stanley burst onto the NRL scene in
2007, scoring a try on debut while juggling first training
with his high school studies.
Chase is the second eldest of six children, the eldest
of five brothers, born in Bankstown Hospital to working-class
parents. His mother, Michele, is from proud league stock,
with her grand-uncles Rangi and Tommy Chase representing
New Zealand in the 1930s. Chase was christened with his
mother's maiden name, and is a distant relative of Dragons
teammate Rangi Chase.

Managed by former Dragons forward Lance Thompson, Stanley
began his first grade career in the backs but has been
earmarked by many as a future second row forward.
A schoolboy sensation in 2007, Stanley capped of a huge
year when he was selected for New Zealand, scoring two
tries in his Test match debut.

In 2008, Chase Stanley was selected for New Zealand Maori,
playing in the World Cup curtain raiser against The Australian
Indigenous Dreamtime team, won 34-26 by the Dreamtime
team.
Contracted with Saints until 2010, Chase Stanley was released
and signed a two-year deal with the Melbourne Storm, beginning
at the completion of season 2009. |

Jason Stevens played in 1993 grand final but broke his
thumb in the first tackle of the match and was unable
to continue.
Defected to Super League in 1996.
A court order forced him to return to Saints only to see
him sidelined with injury. He joined the Sharks in 1997,
playing in a further 168 games.
Stevens ended his first grade career with the Sharks at
the end of 2005 with a total 232 first grade appearances.

Played 281 all-grade games for St George and won a premiership
in all three grades (thirds in 1974, seconds in 1976
and firsts in 1977).
Debuted in first grade in 1975 as an 18-year-old and
was part of a ruthless pack which won the 1977 premiership.
A rugged forward with pace, Stone scored a memorable
runaway try in the Grand Final replay of 1977.
Played in the first State of Origin match in 1980 and
in 1984, Robert Stone was the Dragons' captain 15 times
out of 24 appearances that year.
Became captain-coach of Picton before returning to St
George as an administrator, eventually becoming Football
club CEO in 2001.
Was instrumental in the push to have the Dragons return
to Kogarah Jubilee Oval in 2003.
Robert Stone was diagnosed with tumours in 2003-2004
and passed away on 1st August 2005, aged 49.
